Consists of photographs, correspondence, programs, travel itineraries, reports, and financial records documenting the career of music educator and vocal conductor Joe Grant as well as his management and operation of the University of Illinois Women's Glee Club between 1983 and 2001. In addition, there are cassette audio recordings of Joe Grant's work with the Illinois Summer Youth Music Junior and Senior Choirs from 1983 to 1994, and LP recordings of Joe Grant's work with the Illinois Summer Youth Music Junior and Senior Choirs from 1972 to 1981.
Joe Grant (1947- ) is originally from Louisville, Kentucky. He earned his bachelors degree in music education from Murray State University (1969). As a student, Grant directed several musical theater productions in an annual program called Campus Lights. He was also a member of Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Delta Omicron, and the Radio Club. He then earned a masters degree in vocal (baritone) performance (1971) and advanced study in music education (1972) from the University of Illinois. While a master's student, Grant assisted with the Opera Group, singing in productions of Oklahoma and Molly Brown. Following this, Grant taught at Illinois School District 118, leading the choir at Danville High School. He also starred in and directed several productions with the Danville Light Opera. In 1983, Grant completed his EdD in music education. He became a professor at the University of Illinois the following year. Grant would go on to chair the music education department and the choral division of the School of Music. During his time at the University, Grant conducted the Women's Glee Club and youth choirs at ISYM. Grant taught courses in music education, choral conducting, and vocal jazz, he also taught adult courses in music at OLLI. In 2009, he retired from the University. Grant currently conducts several ensembles including the Adult Choir Director at First Presbyterian Church in Urbana and the Danville Light Opera.
