The collection contains a broad range of popular songs of the day, waltzes, rags, marches and novelty songs, and some classical pieces published in the early 20th century. Most pieces date from 1900 through the 1930s. A number of titles portray racial and ethnic groups: African-Americans, Middle Eastern and exotic island and Asian women. Other pieces express longing, nostalgia, idealized images of home, with many singing of their home states or far off lands. The subjects of many songs are women. A few songs extol soldiers and heroes.

Nearly all of the pieces have cover art designed to attract the sheet music buyer of the early 20th century. The cover art on most pieces about African-Americans that was intended to attract attention of potential buyers spoke to most Americans' negative attitudes toward African-Americans at that time. On the other hand, women are usually portrayed as beautiful, the men as handsome, and the land and homes as idyllic.

Sorted alphabetically by composer, then alphabetically by title, and then chronologically for the same titles. Music anthologies sorted alphabetically by publisher's name and title of the collection. Music anthologies without covers sorted alphabetically by composer of first piece.Traditional music sorted alphabetically by title, the alphabetically by arranger. Music in the collection encompases certain groups of songs including titles from World Wars I and II, titles related to geographic places, rag, and race-related titles and lyrics, as well as popular music of the day. Collector did not have any discernable method for sorting the music.
