Historical Note: Lee Albert Rubel was born in 1928 in New York City and graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1947. He received a B.S. (Cum Laude) in mathematics in 1950 from the City College of New York (now the City University of New York) and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in 1954. After holding teaching and research positions at Cornell and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, Professor Rubel became assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1958, associate professor in 1960, and full professor in 1965. Professor Rubel held numerous teaching and research positions during his career including positions at Columbia University, the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques in Paris, Purdue University, and McGill University. Professor Rubel's research focused on analog computing and meromorphic functions, subjects on which he published widely in the leading journals of his field. He retired from the University of Illinois in 1993 and passed away in March 1995.
