Series 1: Research and Professional Engagement, 1964-2013: consists of Leonard Heumann's research about aging, race, and poverty in urban and regional planning policy and community development, congregate housing, and low-income housing. Also includes material from Heumann's sabbaticals in Australia, Israel, and England, consultation work reports, committee and task-force papers, and certificates, awards, and honors received during the course of his career. This series is organized chronologically with materials from a range of years listed under the first date, and undated items at the end.

Series 2: Course Materials, 1963-2001: consists of course outlines, lecture notes, and student papers from the courses taught by Heumann, as well as courses completed by Heumann during his graduate studies in the late 1960s. Organized numerically by course number, followed by class-related materials without course number arranged chronologically and Heumann's own graduate work arranged at the end of this series, arranged chronologically.

Series 3: Publications, 1974-2004: consists of books, journal articles, reports, conference proceedings, and reviews authored and co-authored by Leonard Heumann, organized chronologically.

Leonard F. Heumann (1941-2016), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Emeritus Professor of Urban and Regional Planning (1965-2013), is a pioneering researcher in the field of housing policy and community development, with a particular interest in the housing needs of minority groups, the elderly, disabled, and low income populations. He is recognized for his domestic and international research in urban and regional planning policy, including the development of better housing for low income and functionally disabled elderly, studies on how stable interracial neighborhoods evolve, and the improvement of analytical tools for low-income housing problems.

Papers include correspondence, awards and honors, professional and sabbatical research, consultation reports, committee and task force papers, research grant and fellowship applications, housing surveys, race and welfare research, materials on aging and housing policy in Israel, Australia, Japan, and Europe, Department of Urban Planning course materials, and publications relating to his work with aging, race, and poverty in urban and regional planning policy, community development, congregate housing, and low-income housing.
