Scope and Contents of the Materials

Consists of original music compositions and audio recordings of performances of his early chamber, choral, orchestra, concert, and jazz band works while a student at the University of North Texas and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign created between 1962 and 1974.

Biographical Note

Dr. Robert Morgan was raised in Houston, Texas and received his BA in music in 1963 from the University of North Texas. He completed his Masters of Music degree from the University of North Texas in 1965 and a Ph.D. in music from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1974. In 1976 he joined the faculty of the Houston, Texas' High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPV) as the Director of Jazz Studies, a position he held until 1999 when he retired. During his tenure at HSPV he establish the jazz program's national and international reputation, and was inducted into the International Association for Jazz Education Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as one of America's leading jazz educators. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the Berklee College of Music in 1999.
