Subject file of the University of Illinois Department of Special Education includes Illinois county public schools and Illinois county school district evaluation reports (1963-2006), administrative files (1964-2003), out-of-state evaluation reports (1973-1989), university course materials (1990-1999), transportation studies (1981-1983), undergraduate curriculum proposals (1976-1987), graduate curriculum proposals (1976-1979), community integration volumes (1976-1998), statewide in-service training guides (1978-1981), curriculum guides (1976-1977), university affiliations (1983-1987), Counterpoint article with photographic prints and negatives (1983), orientation handbook (1988-1989), application packets (1983), Illinois Competitive Employment Project (ICEP), Illinois State Board of Education report 10th year report, COPE review response (1990), resource access project (1988), report on House Bill 150 (1980-1984), Robert Henderson's Retirement Party (1994), and papers regarding the education of special needs children (1976-1987).

Correspondence is primarily from Chairperson Lilly concerning the special education program, staff and faculty development, course information, and recommendations.

Biographical Note

Special education was informally administered in the College of Education until October 1962, when the Department of Special Education was established.1

Precise Early Education of Children with Handicaps (PEECH) Project:

The project was established in 1970 as a model program for the early education of the multiple-handicapped. It is a INT project of the Department of Special Education, Urbana Community School District 116 and the Illinois Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.2

2. Office of Professor Merle B. Karnes. Contract signed 1970 with Bureau of Ed. Handicapped, IL Office of Sup. of Pub. Instruction. Funding started 7/1/70, classroom work, 8/70. Contract ran for three years as a classroom demonstration project. Subsequent contract for dissemination project, through 1975.
