Biographical Note
Edward W. Shineman Jr., the son of Edward W. Shineman and Bertelle Shubert was born on April 9, 1915 in Canajoharie, New York. Shineman was interested in music from a young age attending Interlochen Music Camp in Michigan, where he played Bb cornet. While a student at Interlochen, he was conducted by John Philip Sousa. Shineman attended Cornell University during the Great Depression and performed cornet in the Big Red Marching Band. Shineman also served as president of the University Orchestra and Musical Club, where he would meet his future wife, Doris. After graduating with a degree in accounting in 1937, Shineman began work at General Electric. In 1946, he returned to Canajoharie to take a job with Beech-Nut Life Savers. After the company merged with E.R. Squibb and Co., he transferred to New York City. After retiring in 1985, he returned to his hometown. Together with his wife, Shineman founded the Arkell Fountation, a philanthropic organization and senior citizens residence. Both he and his wife were named University Benefactors at Cornell University in 1997. Despite retiring in 1985, Shineman worked as a part-time accounting consultant for several businesses near Canajoharie until 2008. Shineman died on January 12, 2009 in New York City.
