The Institute for Environmental Studies was approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education in December 1971.1 This Institute on the Champaign-Urbana campus was established as a part of the University-wide Coordinating Council for Environmental Studies reporting to the Office of the Provost.2
Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary programs of research, teaching and public service are encouraged through the programs of the Task Force on Heavy Metals, the Water Resources Center and the Center for Human Ecology.3
