Historical Note:

Gustav Gröber was born in Leipzig, Germany in 1844. Educated in Romance scholarship at the University of Leipzig, Gröber began as an associate professor in Zurich, Switzerland in 1873. He achieved full professorships at the University of Breslau in 1874 and at the University of Strasbourg in 1880, an instructor of Romance philology. While at Strasbourg, Gröber and his colleagues published the Outline of Romance Philology from 1888-1906, and in 1877 he established the Zeitschrift fur romanische Philologie, for which he also served as editor. Gröber died in Strasbourg, France, in 1911.

Celebrated for the encyclopedic breadth of his interests, Gröber is recognized as a leading Romance scholar.
