Scope and Contents of the Materials
Tom Turner (1870-1949) was a British postal worker and an avid book collector. The collection contains correspondence relating to daily life, book collecting, and the literary community in England. These letters, along with a few poems written by others and a photo, accompanied the approximately 8,000 books of Turner's collection that were purchased by the University of Illinois. Correspondence includes letters from his daughter Mary and third-party correspondence.
Collection Historical Note
Tom Turner (1870-1949) was a British postal worker and an avid book collector who lived in Baildon, England. Turner was christened "Tom" instead of "Thomas" because his mother insisted he would be called "Tom" regardless. Despite earning a scholarship for grammar school, Turner only went to school until the age of 12, when his father preferred he started to work. He worked as an errand boy at a tobacco shop until 16, when we started to work at the Bradford Post Office. Turner remained there for another 44 years, where he retired in 1930, having reached the position of Assitant Superintendent. He was survived by his wife Mrs. Muriel Turner, his daughter Mrs. Herbert Ochs, his sister Mrs. Amy E. Atkins, and his niece Mrs. J. M. Robertson.
