Scope and Contents of the Materials

Theatre Program Collection consisting of individual and season programs, advertising broadsides, playbills, newsclippings, and souvenirs from dramatic, comedy, musical theater, vocal and instrumental music, and vaudeville performances in the United States, Great Britain, Europe, Australia, and Canada. The vast majority of the collection relates to venues in Chicago and New York. Many of the programs also contain extensive period advertising graphics and text, as well as editorial columns on fashion and hairstyles. Prominent individuals mentioned in the collection include Julie Andrews, Tallulah Bankhead, Sarah Bernhardt, Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Helen Hayes, Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Adelina Patti, Chita Rivera, and Michael Todd.

Biographical Note

Alyene Elizabeth Westall Prehn is a 1927 graduate of the University of Illinois. Members of her extended family began collecting theatre programs in 1900.  Prehn sold the collection to the University of Illinois in 1961.

Appraisal Information: According to acquistion records, the collection originally came with a catalogue which contained cross-listings of performers, productions, and venues.  This was lost sometime prior to the collection's final move to the Main Library for full processing.
