Title: Theological DissertationsAdd to your cart.

ID: 02/Theolog

Extent: 130.0 Volumes

Arrangement: The finding aid, based on a cataloging effort completed in the 1990s, is arranged in the order of the theses contained in each volume. The particular ordering of theses in each volume is of historical interest, but to aid in locating items on a particular topic or associated with particular individuals, a set of indexes has been prepared and can be found at the end of the document. Appended are subject indexes of topics, names, and biblical passages, and an additional index containing the praeses, respondents, and related names which appear in the documents.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains over 3,000 Lutheran theological dissertations and related writings from German universities written primarily in Latin between 1580-1830. Topics covered range from polemics against rival sects, to views on Islam, to textual criticism and exegesis of the Bible, written in defense of what came to be known as Protestant Orthodoxy. For greater detail on the contents and historical background of these theses, their provenance, and the cataloging methodology followed, please refer to Gene K. Rinkel, "Bibliographic Description of a Collection of Theological Dissertations and Other Academic Writing from German Universities, 1580-1830, at the University of Illinois." Wolfenbutteler Barock-Nachrichten 25, no. 2 (1998), in our collection under call number 015.43075 R475b. Volume 125 cataloged individually under title: Disputatio theologica compendii theologici.
