Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Black Dog Turnpike Trust minutes (approximately 220 pages) record the actions of trustees appointed to oversee the repair and widening of the road between Warminster and Bath in South West England between October 27, 1767, and February 9, 1790. Two brief notes, dated June 1790 and September 1790, follow the final dated meeting minutes, and four additional pages, housed separately, provide a list of trustees from 1767 to 1801. The trustees met periodically at inns in Beckington and Standerwick to discuss surveying, repairs, funding, progress, and administrative issues. Many of the minutes also mention the road between Beckington and Frome.
