Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of a bound manuscript score of Igor Stravinsky's one-act opera Mavra (129 pages) and a bound score of the opera's overture (11 pages). The lengthier score includes the text of Boris Kochno's libretto and is dated 9 March 1922; the shorter score is dated 26 May 1922. A newspaper article containing Emile Vuillermoz's review of Mavra (dated 12 June 1922) is tipped into the volume.

Collection Historical Note

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was a Russian composer and pianist. Widely considered one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, Stravinsky composed in a wide range of musical styles. He lived in Russia, Switzerland, France, and the United States at various points in his life. His opera Mavra (1922), composed during his time in Paris, is based on Domik v Kolomne, a poem by Alexander Pushkin.
