Show Related CreatorsHistorical Note: Irish politician, educated at Stonyhurst College and Trinity College, Dublin, where he distinguished himself as a scholar. In 1821, married Laetitia, daughter of Lucien Bonaparte. His two sons, Napoleon Alfred Bonaparte Wyse (1822-1895) and William Charles Bonaparte Wyse (1826-1892), shared his literary tastes. Devoted his great oratorical and other talents to forwarding the cause of Roman Catholic emancipation. Interested in improving the education of the Irish people, his efforts helped establish provincial colleges in Cork, Galway and Belfast. Fought for and saw adopted principles of state control and inspection in education in England, as well, where a training college for teachers at Battersea was established on lines suggested by him. Was M.P. for the city of Waterford (1835-1847), Lord of the Treasuray (1839-1841), Secretary to the Board of Control (1846-1849), British Minister to Greece (1849), and K.C.B. (1857). Was very successful in his diplomacy and showed a great interest in the educational and other internal affairs of Greece. Wrote "Historical Sketch of the Late Catholic Association of Ireland" (1829); "An Excursion in the Peloponnesus (1858); and "Impressions of Greece" (1871). Died April 16, 1862 in Athens.
