A verse paraphrase of Des cas des nobles hommes et femmes, Laurent de Premierfait's version in French prose of Giovanni Boccaccio's De casibus virorum illustrium. Lydgate's version was undertaken at the request of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, in the 1430s.

Layout: Written in 2 columns of 45 lines; frame-ruled in lead with double inner and outer vertical bounding lines; prickings in outer margin.
Script: Written in a gothic book script.
Decoration: Alternating red or blue initials at the beginnings of each paragraph; occasional red and blue pen-flourished initials.
Binding: 18th cent. (?) calf over paper boards; gold tooled; red spine label "Lidgate MS."
Origin: Written by an unknown scribe, presumably in England, ca. 1450.
