Collation: Parchment, fol. ii (parchment, i is pastedown) + 59 (foliated 1-59) + ii (parchment, ii is pastedown) ; 1-7? (+3) ; horizontal catchwords in inner margin of verso of last leaf of each quire.
Layout: Written in 2 columns of 30 lines; frame-ruled; fol. 59v blank.
Script: Written in a gothic hand; closing chapter (fols. 58r-59r in a different hand).
Decoration: Illuminated opening initial (fol. 1r) with miniature of St. Benedict delivering the Rule to four nuns; marginal decorations on fol. 1r inhabited with a dragon, and hounds chasing a hare and a stag; decorative initials at beginning of each chapter in red or blue; rubricated.
Binding: Red velvet over oak boards with brass trim along edges; clasps missing.
Origin: Written in France (Metz?), probably ca. 1270.
Provenance: On fol. 25r is pasted a strip of paper with text: "Ego soror Claudia de Grilly promitto stabilitatem et co[n]uersionem meorum morum; et obedientiam secundum Regulam sancti benedicti Coram deo et sanctis eius in hoc monasterio quod est costructum in honore Sancti sulpitii et Sancte Glodesindis virginis in presentia d[omi]ni Benedicti Abbatis--Sancti Arnulphi Et d[omi]no" -- Armorial bookplate of William Horatio Crawford, Lakeland, Cork, inside front cover -- Armorial bookplate of Thomas Brooke, Armitage Bridge, inside front cover -- Acton Griscom, High Point, New Jersey -- Purchased from Harper, 11 February 1955.
