Collection Historical Note
Alvin Doyle Moore (1931-2013) was an American graphic designer, fine printer, and educator. Born to Selva Dewey and Louetta Carrie Leitner Moore in Seiling, Oklahoma, Moore was adopted by Hazel and Lynn Russell of Garden City, Kansas, in 1947.
Moore attended the University of Kansas and earned a BA in architecture circa 1953. He then served four years with the United States Air Force. While stationed in Tokyo, Moore served as an art director for Stars and Stripes. Here, he recognized an interest in graphic design, as well as in Japanese arts and culture.
Shortly after his return to the United States, Moore matriculated at the University of Iowa, earning an MFA in design circa 1959. He was first introduced to fine printing as a graduate student under Harry Duncan (1916-1997), founder of Cummington Press. In 1959, Moore joined the faculty at the University of Illinois, where he taught graphic design at the School of Art and Design. During this time, he also founded Finial Press, a private press of fine books and ephemera that operated in Champaign, IL, for roughly 40 years.
Even in retirement, Moore maintained his relationship with the Champaign-Urbana community. He taught courses in advanced typography and Japanese aesthetics, and served as Chief Administrator of the Chado Urasenke Takokai Urbana-Champaign Association.
