Edward Samuel Held was born in New York City in 1894. Held was a Hollywood set and architectural designer, and lived and worked in Southern California for much of his adult life. He worked for numerous major motion picture studios, including Warner Bros., Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Twentieth Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures, and RKO Studios, and created architectural and interior design drawings for many commercial and residential spaces.

Held was married to Carmen Held (born circa 1898), with whom he shared three children: Edward, Alice, and Joe. He died in Woodland Hills, CA in 1985.
