This collection contains a typed English translation of the Swedish work, Abraham Lincoln, den store amerikanen (1940), written by Sven Wikberg. The volume was translated as Abraham Lincoln: The Great American by Adam Julius Strohm circa 1940-1950.
Sven Wikberg (1890-1959) was a Swedish author who wrote several biographies on historical figures, including Abraham Lincoln, Elizabeth Tudor, and Oliver Cromwell. Adam Julius Strohm (1870-1951) received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Uppsala in 1888, and a Bachelor of Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1900. After working as a librarian at the Armour Institute in Chicago, Illinois, and at the Free Public Library in Trenton, New Jersey, he served as Chief Librarian of the Detroit Public Library from 1913 to 1941.
This collection contains a typed translation of Abraham Lincoln, den store amerikanen (1940) by Sven Wikberg, translated by Adam Julius Strohm from Swedish to English. Abraham Lincoln: The Great American chronicles the life of Abraham Lincoln beginning with the arrival of his ancestors to America in 1638, through his childhood growing up in Indiana, until his death in 1865. The manuscript also contains a preface by Strohm detailing the need for a translation of the biography from Swedish to English. Strohm asserted that the translation gives readers insight into how Lincoln was viewed from a global perspective and provides a deeper understanding of the legacy of Lincoln.
This collection was donated to the University of Illinois by Cecilia Strohm, wife of Adam Julius Strohm, in 1957.
