Scope and Contents:
In this letter of Mar. 4, 1796, James Madison, then a member of Congress, wrote to Arnold Henry Dohrman, a New York merchant of Dutch origin. Madison, a representative of Dohrman's firm, reports on a protested debt between Dohrman and Philip Mazzei, an Italian architect who assisted Virginia and the entire colonial effort during the American Revolution. Madison professes his hopes for the "most liberal intentions" in repaying the debt and prefers that the New York rate of interest, seven percent, be used in calculating it.
This item was separated from the Heinrich A. Rattermann Collection. This letter is not included in The Papers of James Madison, ed. J. C. A. Stagg et al., but Dohrman's reply can be found in 16 (1989): 263-64.
