Released by 20th Century Fox in 1955, Prince of Players is a biographical film about the early career of Edwin Booth, Shakespearean actor and brother of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. Starring Richard Burton as Edwin and John Derek as John, the film was produced and directed by Philip Dunne and written by Moss Hart, adapted from a book of the same name by Eleanor Ruggles. The film played for a limited time in January 1955 at Chicago's Balaban & Katz United Artists Theatre, located at the corner of Randolph and Dearborn Streets.
This collection contains seven publicity stills from Prince of Players, given to Lincoln collector Earl C. Kubicek by the Balaban & Katz Corporation following its run in Chicago. The collection also includes a cover letter to Kubicek from Abe J. Platt of Balaban & Katz, newspaper advertisements from the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Tribune, and an article about director Philip Dunne and a review of the film, both written by Chicago Tribune film critic Mae Tinee.
