Ernst Hertzberg was born in 1853 and immigrated to Chicago from Gramzow, Germany when he was about 13. Hertzberg had apprenticed with a bookbinder in Germany at a young age. In 1874, he began working for Ringer and Co. Bindery, in which he later became a partner. One of his most notable bookbinding endeavors is a twelve volume set entitled
Sloane's Life of Napoleon Bonaparte in which he inlaid original Napoleonic materials into Sloane's biographical material. Hertzberg died in 1918 and the bindery passed on to his son, Edward Hertzberg.
