Scope and Contents:
This collection includes a volume of corrected proofs of Charles Manfred Thompson's Master's thesis (University of Illinois, 1910), "A Study of the Administration of Thomas Ford, Governor of Illinois, 1842-46," as printed in Evarts Boutell Greene and Thompson, eds., Governors' Letter-Books, 1840-1853, Collections of the Illinois State Historical Library, Vol. 7 (Executive Series, Vol. 2)(Springfield, 1911), xv-cxviii, and the Preface, ix-x. In addition, the volume contains Thompson's five-page typed outline of a portion of the published study relating in particular to the Illinois and Michigan Canal.
The collection also includes a copy of George Haven Putnam, A Prisoner of War in Virginia, 1864-5 (1912). In 1920, Thompson wrote on the title page: "For years I carried on an interesting correspondence with Major Putnam."
Also part of the collection but filed separately are two maps, H. S. Tanner, The Travellers Pocket Map of Indiana ... (Philadelphia, 1831), and J. H. Young, The Tourist's Pocket Map of the State of Illinois (Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, 1834), reprinted as Illinois One Hundred Years Ago (Chicago, Northern Trust Co., 1934).
Joseph Thompson, Charles M. Thompson's son, gave these materials to Dan Eaton of Champaign, Ill. who, in turn, gave them to the Library in 1998. See also Dean Thompson's papers in the University Archives, 9/1/20.
