Writing to his wife on Apr. 6, 1860, Owen Lovejoy briefly described the tumultuous reaction to "The Barbarism of Slavery," his speech the prior day in Congress. The original letter is in the University of Michigan's Clements Library. In 1912, Lovejoy's son, Elijah Parish Lovejoy II, gave the Illinois Historical Survey a typescript of part of his father's letter. See William F. Moore and Jane Ann Moore, eds., Owen Lovejoy, His Brother's Blood: Speeches and Writings, 1838-64 (2004), 191.
