This press pass, belonging to Chicago educator and journalist Margaret Jane Codd, contains daily admissions tickets to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.
Margaret Jane Codd (fl. ca. 1890-1920) was a Chicago educator, education and children’s writer, and journalist for educational periodicals. She earned a teaching certificate from the Chicago Board of Education in 1891 and was later employed at the Harrison School. She covered the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition for the Journal of Education and the 1907 Jamestown Ter-Centennial Exposition for the School Journal, reporting on educational matters. Codd wrote a number of books, including the education books Primary Language Exercises (1892) and How to Teach Constructive Work in Primary Schools (1901) and historical works such as The Story of Lafayette (1898) and On Board a United States Battleship with Evans to the Pacific (1919).
This press pass, issued to Codd, contains admissions tickets to attend the fair between May 1–October 30, 1893. It also includes a photograph of Codd and a brief statement of her background as a journalist. Several tickets have been removed, but unused tickets remain. The item was printed by the American Bank Note Co., New York.
