Scope and Contents:
This collection contains transcripts of 13 documents from the Illinois Auditor of Public Accounts Land Office records. The transcripts were taken from selected official records housed in the Kaskaskia and Edwardsville, Illinois land offices. The records include resolutions of the Illinois Territorial Legislature, petitions to Congress, and correspondence.
The majority of the items in this collection are letters, dating between 1815 and 1818. Correspondents discuss property and land claims, survey requests, and controversy regarding the Surveyor General in Illinois. Letters offer a glimpse at the increased demand for land in the Illinois territory before it became a state in 1818. The collection also includes two resolutions passed by the Illinois Territorial Legislature and a petition to Congress regarding land claims and territorial government.
The original records are located in the Illinois State Archives.
