Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a company muster book for the 1st Illinois Artillery Regiment, led by Captain Joseph Cross. Captain Cross's company saw duty at Bellefontaine, Louisiana Territory, and Fort Massac, with detached services at Fort Madison and Fort Osage. The record book includes a table of contents; priority rolls of enlistment and description; registers of men tried, discharged or transferred; registers of dead, deserted, and missing; provision returns; accounts of clothing and equipage; and individual accounts. These company records date from 1812 to 1814.
In the mid-to-late 1830s, several pages scattered throughout the volume were used for secondary purposes. Some pages were used to record fees associated with various legal cases. Other pages appear to have been used as scrap paper by a schoolchild.
The volume was acquired by the Library prior to 1956.
