Scope and Contents:
Beginning in 1837, some 30 friends of Martha Lindsey inscribed sentiments of friendship in this album. They usually only initialed their contributions, which were generally poetical and accorded with the words embossed on the cover, "Flowers of Loveliness."
In 1858, Martha Lindsey had married John Lindsey. He made entries in his wife's album on their first and twentieth anniversaries. Lindsey, "a young evangelist of great promise," had taught from 1850 to 1852 at the Walnut Grove Academy, the precursor of Eureka College in Eureka, Ill. A History of Eureka College (St. Louis: Christian Publishing Co., 1894), 26.
The Library bought the album (MS 318) in 1941.
