Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of photostats of letters sent to Henrietta Crosby Ingersoll and George Ingersoll from Horace Greeley and a Senator John P. Hale.
Henrietta Crosby Ingersoll (1814-1893) was born in New Hampshire and later lived in Bangor, Maine, and Washington, D.C. She married George W. Ingersoll, a lawyer who served as the attorney general of Maine in 1860.
The collection contains three letters sent to Henrietta Ingersoll by Horace Greeley, in which he discussed various problems facing the New-York Tribune during wartime, such as costs and subscribers. In one letter Greeley also voiced his hope that Abraham Lincoln would not be re-elected as president for another term. The collection also includes a letter sent to Henrietta Ingersoll's husband, George Ingersoll, from Senator John. P. Hale of New Hampshire. In the letter Hale declined George Ingersoll's request for Hale to appoint Ingersoll's son to West Point Military Academy.
