Scope and Contents:

This collection contains an account book of sales transactions, first of an unidentified general store, 1877-88, and then of the Library Clearing House, Chicago, Dec. 1901-Aug. 1902.

Entries for the store (pages 1-217) often give the customer's name. A few entries also specify what was sold, everything from groceries and liquor to carriages.

Julius Doerner (d.1917), a book collector who briefly operated the Clearing House, ran a book store for many years. His correspondence is held by the University Archives (9/50/4). Entries for his Clearing House (pages 233-353) specify particular titles as well as general categories, e.g. novels. The collection also contains a few Doerner letters, notes, and envelopes, 1902-3 (9 items).

The account book contains in addition an index (page 221) for a few entries on other pages relating to a restaurant and hotel.
