This note, written February 6, 1841, indicates a payment made by Abraham Lincoln to Thomas T. Gantt, a lawyer based in St. Louis, Missouri.
In early 1841, Abraham Lincoln was singlehandedly operating the law office he shared with John T. Stuart while Stuart served his term in the United States House of Representatives. Lincoln had fallen behind on financial accounts and had been reminded in a note sent on January 30 to make a payment to Thomas T. Gantt in exchange for legal services.
This item is Lincoln's note written in response to Gantt on February 6, 1841, which included the requested payment of $46.00.
The note was acquired by the University Library in an auction in 1991, with support from the Dr. Harlan Horner Estate.
