Scope and Contents:
This collection contains five scrapbooks of newspaper clippings from the mid- to late nineteenth century. The articles were clipped from many different newspapers, including the Examiner and Chronicle [New York, NY], Watchman and Reflector [Boston, MA], Louisville Courier-Journal [Louisville, KY], Sherburne News [Sherburne, NY], Albany Evening Journal [Albany, NY], and others.
Volume A includes clippings of stories and poems with themes relating to morality and religion. Volume B focuses on Sherburne, New York, and includes clippings about important families in the history of the town, church histories, and plans for the centennial celebration of the founding of Sherburne. Volume C features printed speeches, biographic sketches and histories, news stories, and poetry.
Volume D contains articles and poetry about many different subjects, including financial and commercial statistics, agriculture production, reports on New York canals and bank holdings, national treasury reports, lectures and speeches, and European politics and history. Volume E primarily features political articles that include speeches supporting or opposing various acts in Congress, voting returns, presidential nominations, and stories about the Free Soil and Locofoco Parties. Indexes are located at the end of Volume D and the beginning of Volume E for the clippings included in those volumes.
