This collection contains transcripts and photocopies of letters written by David T. Grow, a farmer and Union soldier, to his parents and sister, dating from April 1864 to July 1865.
David T. Grow was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1847, and as a child he moved with his mother to Aledo, Illinois. He served as a private in Company A of the 30th Illinois Volunteer Infantry from February 1864 to July 1865. After the war, he returned to the family farm in Aledo, where he died in 1871 at the age of 24, possibly of tuberculosis.
In Grow's letters, written to his mother Ann Jobusch, step-father Louis Jobusch and his half-sister Emma Jobusch, he describes camp life, including his battle wounds and illnesses. He also describes the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, and General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea.
This collection was loaned for copying by L. B. Jobusch to the Illinois Historical Survey, predecessor of the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections, in 1965.
