The Dohrman brothers were merchants who operated two offices of their mercantile house-- Jacob Dohrman in Lisbon and Arnold Henry Dohrman in New York. Their correspondence reports on arrivals of vessels, cargoes, prices of commodities, and general information concerning trade conditions in Europe, especially in Portugal and Spain during the period 1777-1808. Other correspondence reveals the assistance given by Arnold Dohrman to American sailors imprisoned in Portugal during the American Revolution, and his later claims to Congress for compensation for his services. The collection also contains a 1784 letter from Arthur Lee to his brother, Richard Henry Lee, in which Arthur Lee refers to the situation between American and British in regard to the Canadian border and treaties with Native Americans. Later correspondence includes accounts of the Napoleonic wars, including a description of the death of Lord Nelson.
