He brought together many of his writings in Abraham Lincoln: A New Portrait (2 volumes, published in 1931). Hertz was also active in the Weik Manuscript Corporation, which was engaged in selling the Herndon-Weik Collection of Lincolniana (now held by the Library of Congress) from the estate of Jesse W. Weik (1857-1930). In 1938 Hertz published a selection of papers from the Herndon-Weik collection in The Hidden Lincoln from the Letters and Papers of William H. Herndon.
