Collection Description

Scope and Contents:

This collection consists of 12 letters to and from Sidney Breese. The three incoming letters are from William Martin of Alton, Ill., about business matters. The nine outgoing letters include eight items, dated February through December of 1843, to Pierre Menard, Breese's business agent and creditor. They concerned business affairs. The other letter sent by Breese is a June 14, 1869 letter to Myra Bradwell, who led the movement to open the legal profession to women in Illinois. In that letter Breese offers support in building the reputation and circulation of the Chicago Legal News.

Sidney Breese (1800-1878) was a U.S. Senator from 1843 to 1849 and a justice of the Illinois Supreme Court from 1857 to 1878.
