This collection consists of a eulogy written by Reverend Nathaniel Milton Wood three days after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
Nathaniel Milton Wood (1882-1876) was a leading Baptist minister in Maine. Born in Camden, he graduated from Waterville (now Colby) College in 1844, and later attended the Western Baptist Theological Institute in Covington, Kentucky. Ordained in Bloomfield (now Skowhegan), Maine in 1848, he held pastorates in Waterville, Lewiston, and Thomaston, Maine. In 1868, he became professor of systematic theology at Shurtleff College in Upper Alton, Illinois, before returning to Maine in 1874.
This collection contains a 28-page manuscript dated three days after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. It refers to turning points in Lincoln's presidency and includes quotations from the writings of Lincoln. The manuscript is written on notched and hand-knotted sheets with occasional underlining with red and blue pencil.
The Library acquired the collection in 2015.
