Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of original correspondence, written in 1864, and typescripts of letters primarily from Margaret A. King to her husband Philander B. King. While Margaret had stayed behind in Warren, Illinois, her husband Philander had moved west to the Nevada Territory.
Margaret's letters document her experience running the farm and caring for her children. They also include details such as the weather and the price of goods and produce. The collection contains two letters sent from Philander to Margaret as well, giving insight into his life in Washoe City in the Nevada Territory. There are also three letters sent to Philander from a relative named J.M. Barber and from friends J.E. Scace and D.C. Allen. Most of the letters have stamped envelopes attached.
The Library purchased this collection from Arthur W. Osborn in 1967.
