Solon J. Buck was a member of the staff of the Illinois Historical Survey and a research associate in the University of Illinois History Department from 1910 to 1914. After leaving Illinois, he held the position of Superintendent of the Minnesota Historical Society (1914-1931) and later, Professor of History at the University of Pittsburgh and Director of the Western Pennsylvania Historical Society (1931-1935). He joined the National Archives in 1935 and served as the Archivist of the United States from 1941 to 1948.

This collection contains two letters exchanged between Buck and T. C. Pease in 1931. The letters concern Buck's offer of several papers and sets of notes to Pease. The paper entitled "Material for Illinois History in the Archives of the United States Government at Washington" was accepted by Pease for the Survey. There are also two sets of bibliographic notecards (4x6) in this collection. One set of six boxes is an author-subject bibliography while the other, of three boxes, is arranged chronologically, by topic, by type of work, and other categories.
