Scope and Contents of the Materials
Horace Miller moved from Mount Morris, N.Y., to Kishwaukee, Winnebago County, Ill., in 1839. This collection contains 14 letters to Horace from his brother, Ezra, from Brooklyn, N.Y., and two notebooks used by Horace's daughter, Nancy (1823-1909), to record poetry and family biographical sketches. The collection also contains a lengthy family genealogy, compiled by Horace's great-granddaughter, Hope Miller Matthews, that includes information on Ezra's locomotive and corn planter patents and a list of family tombstones in the New Milford Cemetery in Rockford, Ill. The genealogy documents the Miller, Aldren, Clark, and Coshun branches of the family. The collection, formed in 1974-75, includes correspondence from Hope Miller Matthews, of Evanston, Ill., which contains family biographical information that supports the genealogy. Elizabeth Lawton, of Rockford, Ill., whose mother-in-law was Horace Miller's granddaughter, also contributed to the collection.
