Scope and Contents:
Benjamin Green, one of the first settlers of Morgan County, Illinois, asked his youngest daughter, Elizabeth Green Merras, to write this letter of Dec. 9, 1861, to relatives in England. The letter primarily concerns the inclusion of a woodcut of the Green home on a projected Scott County map, but also includes Elizabeth's impressions of the Civil War, including the degree of war spirit in Scott County, economic conditions, and expectations of a looming battle in Columbus, Ky.
Frances Block of East Lansing, Mich., a descendant of the Greens, donated this photocopy of the letter to the Library in 1983.
