Forms of Material: Organizational records

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Predominantly consisting of records from the Religious Society of Friends Illinois Yearly Meeting and the Quarterly and Monthly Meetings affiliated with it, this collection includes minutes, clerk's and treasurer's records, publications, reports, committee records, correspondence, and various other materials.

The Illinois Yearly Meeting was established in 1875 by the Blue River Quarterly Meeting and the Prairie Grove Quarterly Meeting. These Quarterly Meetings were previously affiliated with the Hicksite branches of the Indiana and Baltimore Yearly Meetings, respectively. In 1900, the Illinois Yearly Meeting joined with six other Hicksite Yearly Meetings to form the Friends General Conference, with which it remains affiliated to the present.

The records in this collection have been organized into five series: Illinois Yearly Meeting, Quarterly Meetings, Monthly Meetings, National and International Organizations, and Other Yearly Meetings.

The Illinois Yearly Meeting series (1875-2022, 14.5 cubic feet) contains minutes, publications, committee materials, financial records, and other materials related to the work of the Yearly Meeting. It is arranged in 15 subseries, each described in more detail in the attached inventory.

The Quarterly Meetings series (1828-2015, 4.1 cubic feet) consists of records for the Blue River Quarterly Meeting and several Chicago-area Quarterly Meetings, including the Fox Valley Quarterly (Illinois Yearly), Chicago Quarterly (Western Yearly), and the Metropolitan Chicago General Meeting.

The Monthly Meetings series (1841-2022, 27.7 cubic feet) is comprised of records for individual monthly meetings throughout the United States, with the bulk falling within the scope of the Illinois Yearly Meeting. Some meetings have several boxes of records while others have only a folder or two. Those with more substantial collections of records include 57th Street (Chicago), Chicago Monthly, Clear Creek (McNabb), Decatur, Downers Grove, Evanston, Friends Hill, Lake Forest, Northside (Chicago), St. Louis (Missouri), Spoon River (Peoria-Galesburg), Springfield, Thorn Creek/South Suburban, and Urbana-Champaign.

The National and International Organizations series (1943-2007, 3.7 cubic feet) includes correspondence, publications, and other records from various external organizations and events. These include the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), Friends General Conference, and Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC), and well as numerous other Friends special interest organizations and events.

The Other Yearly Meetings series (1846-2010, 1.5 cubic feet) consists of correspondence and other collected materials from Yearly Meetings throughout the world. Among these, the Ohio Yearly Meeting and the Western Yearly Meeting are the most extensively documented.

This collection of records of the Religious Society of Friends was begun in 1977. Since then, Illinois Yearly Meeting and many constituent Quarterly and Monthly Meetings have deposited additional materials in the collection, and the archives as a whole is expected to grow in the future.

The attached inventory (last updated in fall 2023) includes both an outline of the collection and a folder-by-folder listing of the material. The inventory also includes additional notes for selected meetings on the scope of the records and the history of their acquisition.
