Marietta Busey Tawney, a member of the early Urbana family and a graduate of Vassar College in 1899, returned to Urbana in 1930 when her husband, Guy Allen Tawney, was appointed to the University of Illinois faculty. She immediately became active in civic and welfare activities, and served as an officer of the Champaign County League of Women Voters, the Illinois Public Health Committee (1942-47), the Illinois Conference on the City-Manager Plan, the Community Chest, and the Champaign County Emergency Relief Committee. This collection documents Tawney's work on behalf of these groups and includes correspondence, speeches, reports and studies, notes, pamphlets, laws, and other items.
