Scope and Contents:
William Maclure was a geologist, a patron of science and education, and the founder of the New Harmony Working Men's Institute. This collection contains correspondence between Maclure and Marie D. Fretageot in which they discuss the social experiment at New Harmony, Ind., and the development of its scientific and educational programs.
Arthur E. Bestor, Jr., directed the arrangement, cataloging, and microfilming of the collection in 1952. Many of the letters, edited by Bestor, were published in the Indiana Historical Society Publications, 15:3 (1948).
