Scope and Contents:
This collection includes a diary and a copy of notes written by U.S. Deputy Surveyor, Captain Thomas Joyes from 1816 to 1817. He describes his journey up the river from St. Louis, proceeding to Fort Clark near Peoria and then to camp. The notes include descriptions of locations with suitable land, timber, coal, and mineral deposits, along with sketches of the rivers and drawings of a township.
The diary was donated by Morton V. Joyes in 1913.
