This collection consists of photocopies of letters written to and from Harriet Lane Johnston, James Buchanan's niece.
Harriet Lane Johnston (1830-1903) was the niece of President James Buchanan, and acted as the First Lady of the United States during his presidency.
The collection contains photocopies of 21 letters written to and from Harriet Lane Johnston, dated 1861 to 1864. The letters discuss personal and family matters, as well as Abraham Lincoln's first reception and government issues.
The letters are photocopies of the originals in the Buchanan Papers at the Library of Congress.
