American Association of University Women, Aurora Branch Records, 1994-1995

This collection is comprised of records from the Aurora branch of the American Association of University Women. Situated in the western suburbs of Chicago, the Aurora branch promotes gender equity for women of all ages through education, research, and advocacy. Records include newsletters, a newspaper clipping, and a yearbook.

The American Association of University Women began in 1881 when seventeen women in Boston formed the Association of Collegiate Alumnae for the purpose of uniting the alumnae of different institutions for practical educational work. In 1889 it merged with the Western Association of College Women under the ACA name. A final union with the Southern Association of College Women in 1921 brought about the present AAUW.

The Aurora branch of AAUW was founded in November of 1919, and the first meeting was held on December 2, 1920. As of 2016, the branch continues to promote equity and advocacy for women.

The collection is comprised of one Publications series. Newsletters offer insight into the activities of the branch and include event calendars, minutes, study group schedules, branch news, and other topics. The collection also contains the 1994-1995 yearbook, which features event and study group schedules, officer and membership lists, branch bylaws, and the AAUW-IL public policy program. Included in the collection is a newspaper clipping which discusses the branch's 75th anniversary celebration and its contributions to the community.

The Aurora branch is housed with the Chicago, Inc. and Rockford branches of AAUW.
