Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of two original letters sent from Governor DeWitt Clinton to Dr. John W. Francis. At the time the letters were written, DeWitt Clinton was Governor of New York and Dr. John W. Francis was a professor in the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York.
In the letters, which were sent on July 26, 1823, and June 28, 1824, Clinton discusses the manuscript of his memoirs and comments briefly on politics and the outbreak of yellow fever in New York.
These letters were originally attached to the Survey's copy of David Hosack's Memoir of DeWitt Clinton (1829). The copy of the book contains the following inscription, "Presented by the author to the New York Athenaeum, 1829."
