Scope and Contents:
This letter, written by the residents of Cahokia, Ill., was a rebuttal to accusations made by Father Pierre Huet de la Valiniere against Father Paul de St. Pierre. The letter, of which the Survey has an early translation, was read orally to Cahokia residents after high Mass on Apr. 22, 1787. Because of this conflict, and other incidents, the residents refused to accept de la Valiniere as "Vicar General of Illinois." The letter, in French and translated, is printed in Clarence Walworth Alvord, ed., Kaskaskia Records, Collections of the Illinois State Historical Library, 5 (Springfield, 1909), 554-58, and see Alvord's Introduction (Chapter III, "Ecclesiastical Affairs"), xxxii-l.
